1.What is the Internet?
It is a post WWII technology and telecommunications system which started in 1969 as the U.S Department of Defense’s Advanced Research Project Agency to facilitate immediate communication within the Department in case there are wars. It is a hardware and worldwide network of computers that are connected to each other over cables, phone lines, radio or satellite links. The network functions when the computer of each individual user is directly or indirectly connected to a server, which provides information and transfer it back to the server. The server is a fast computer having a big memory and storage space connecting many computers and devices so that the communication of information between these devices are done easily. When these networks are interconnected, the Internet is formed. The Internet also uses standardized communication protocols called the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the Internet Protocol (IP) which are languages of Internet. The TCP and IP are said to be pivotal to the Internet.
2.What is the World Wide Web?
The World Wide Web, WWW is a software and application which have many linked multimedia pages. The WWW has been developed in 1989 and put into practice in 1990 because of Tim Berners-Lee who had written his theories and suggested for a new system of accessing data. The WWW is not the Internet but one of the many collection of protocols of the Internet. The hypertext is known to be the key for the success of the web. Also, the web has many several basic components such as the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), the Domain Name System (DNS), the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) and the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (https) which facilitates users to communicate which each other or do research.
3.What is the relationship between the World Wide Web and the Internet?
The Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) are not similar but they are related to each other. The Internet is a form of a hardware while the WWW is an application which is a software. The Internet is accessible without the web while there is no web without the Internet. Also, the Internet uses the Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol languages compared to the web which uses Hypertext Transfer Protocol to transfer information.
4.What are three purported differences between the World Wide Web as it first emerged, and the more recent Web 2.0?
The World Wide Web also known as Web 1.0, when first emerged was slow compared to the recent Web 2.0 which is faster and powerful due to the improvement of infrastructure and increased in bandwidth. The Web 1.0 used to rely on taxonomy while the recent Web 2.0 is about folksonomy. The Web 2.0 now has greater participation of users making it more social compared to the Web 1.0 which had little participation and was less social as it was mostly about publishing.
5.What are API's and why are they significant to Web 2.0?
API’s are Application Programming Interface’s which are set of routines, protocols and tools to build software applications. The API specifies how software components should interact. It also acts as a messenger which takes requests and tells a system what the user want to do and returns the response back to the user. They are significant to Web 2.0 as they help in accessing data of applications over the Web 2.0. Through API’ s of the Web 2.0 applications, information is gained, shared and download faster, for example the Google Maps API and YouTube API allows the developers to integrate with the applications which benefits the users.
